Vincenzo Sgaramella

Contemporary Abstract Painter

Vincenzo Sgaramella is an Italian-born painter based in Cambridge whose work is shaped by a deeply reflective, intuitive approach. There is a quiet intensity in his practice. A sense of structure emerging slowly from silence. His paintings unfold as abstract architectural landscapes, where form is not imposed, but discovered. Shapes appear, shift, and settle into a delicate balance between control and intuition. What begins with a few guiding lines gradually evolves into something more instinctive, as the painting itself takes over.

Working primarily with oil on jute canvas, Vincenzo allows the raw surface to remain visible. These unpainted areas are not empty; they hold space, creating an atmosphere around the forms and giving the compositions a sense of depth and stillness. The texture of the canvas becomes part of the work's language — grounding the more fluid, intuitive elements. His process is slow and considered, often taking several months to complete a single painting. Working on a large-scale canvas, his pieces carry a strong physical presence, inviting viewers to step into the spaces they create.

Born in Andria, Italy, Vincenzo trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari before continuing his studies at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. He has since developed a distinctive visual language and exhibited his work in the UK and internationally, including at the Royal Scottish Academy. His paintings invite the viewer into a space that feels both constructed and open — where emotion is translated into form, and where stillness carries its own quiet energy.
