Japanese Hanging Scroll – Kohina (幸雛)

Azuma Seikan (Kinoshita Katsunori)

Dimensions: approx. 195 × 58 cm
Medium: Hand-painted on silk
Mounting: Traditional Japanese hanging scroll (kakemono)
Condition: Very good - with original signed wooden box (tomobako)

This refined Japanese hanging scroll depicts Kohina (幸雛), a type of traditional Hina dolls, shown beneath softly flowering cherry blossoms. The subject is deeply rooted in Japanese seasonal and cultural tradition and is associated with Hina Matsuri (Girls’ Day), symbolising happiness, protection, and well-being.

The work is hand-painted on silk, demonstrating exceptional delicacy in line, colour gradation, and surface texture. The subtle palette and elegant composition reflect the influence of the Yūzen dyeing tradition, for which the artist was particularly renowned. The richly patterned garments of the dolls contrast beautifully with the ethereal background and drifting sakura blossoms.

The scroll is the work of Azuma Seikan (聖觀), also known as Higashi Seikan / Tōseikan, the art name of Kinoshita Katsunori (木下勝功, ?–2006), a distinguished Japanese Yūzen dyeing artist.

Signature and seals:

  • Signed and sealed on the scroll: 聖觀 (Seikan)

  • Title: 幸雛 (Kohina)

  • Original wooden box inscription: 聖觀作之 (Painted by Seikan)

  • Box seal: 聖觀 (Seikan)

The presence of matching signatures and seals on both the scroll and its original tomobako confirms authenticity and enhances the work’s collectible value.

The scroll is traditionally mounted with harmonious brocade borders and wooden rollers and remains in very good condition. It would make an elegant display piece, particularly suitable for seasonal exhibition in spring, or as a refined addition to a collection of Japanese art, textiles, or decorative works.
